Headaches

Headache is one of the commonest causes of visits to the GPs and Pharmacies. It could be due to a variety of reasons and is mostly benign hence resolves on its own however we should pay close attention if the headache persists and doesn’t respond to painkillers such as paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
The commonest causes of headaches are.
1. Alcohol use
2. Changes in sleep patterns
3. Emotional Stress
4. Use of medications and stimulants
5. Eye, neck or back strain due to poor posture.
6. Noise
7. Light
These tend to be benign and resolve on their own, all you need to do is to take painkillers.

Headache with fever, chills and general body aches normally signifies an infection, you will need to rule out Malaria, Typhoid and other causes of infection in our environment.

Persistent headache with or without dizziness in adults could also be a sign of cardiovascular disease, check your BP, cholesterol and blood sugar.

If you are on antihypertensives/ antidiabetics and get headaches/to feel dizzy after taking your drugs, check your BP/ Blood sugar to be sure that it’s not too low and discuss it with your doctor.

If you have or witness someone with a sudden and severe headache, vomiting, drowsiness and restlessness, get that person to the nearest hospital.

If you have or witness someone with sudden headache, weakness and loss of function on a part of the body get to the nearest hospital.

While the majority of headaches are mostly self-limiting and do not need medical intervention, Headaches of more than 3 days should not be overlooked.
We should also try as much as we can to understand the cause of our Headaches.

Malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne blood disease transmitted to humans by the Anopheles mosquito

Once an infected mosquito bites a human, the parasites multiply in the host’s liver before infecting and destroying red blood cells.

In some places, early diagnosis can help treat and control malaria. However, some countries lack the resources to carry out effective screening.

Dr Dosunmu Jubril reveals mosquitoes are just the transporters of malaria while human beings are the major carriers of the disease.

According to him, Malaria is being over-diagnosed hence its popularity as its symptoms are similar to the majority of other diseases such as chills, general feeling of discomfort, headache, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, Abdominal pain, Muscle or joint pain

It’s not advisable to treat malaria with just one medicine because it’s quick to build resistance turning the drug ineffective

If you are diabetic or prediabetic remember that you immune system wouldn’t respond to infections as fast as that of non diabetic individuals.
If you are hypertensive remember that covid19 causes the blood to clot and the fever will cause your heart to beat sometimes twice as fast as it should, it could cause you to have a heart attack, a stroke, renal failure and obstruction of blood to parts of your lungs therefore worsening your breathlessness.
Some people feel they have no health issues but still get very severe form of covid19, others passed it to vulnerable family members.
The second wave of covid19 infections is far more widespread and has being more lethal then the first wave in Nigeria.
Covid19 is the most expensive infectious disease to treat today in Nigeria.
The cost of PCR testing is between 40000- 50000.
The daily cost of admission in a private isolation center is between 500000 and 1000000, Majority of these centers will only accept patients after depositing at least 5000000.
The daily impact of covid19 on health care workers has also being devastating with Doctors, Nurses, cleaners and Paramedical professionals suffering heavy losses.
Remember that you can also get Covid19 twice as immunity tends to last for 4-8 months and the second infection tends to be more severe.
Developing countries can’t afford a lock down again and they wouldn’t lock down. It is up to you to protect your loved ones, the Vulnerable and our elderly parents.

Avoid large gatherings.

What to know before running a Covid-19 test

Before running a Covid-19 test kindly understand the kind of test you are running. Unfortunately alot of people have being victims of misinformation and alot of health care workers have paid with their health and lives while attending to patients that were presumed Negative.
The are currently 3 tests available in Nigeria.
1. Antigen test.
2. PCR test.
3. Antibody test.

1. Antigen test (frequently referred to as a rapid test). This test detects protein fragments specific to the Coronavirus. It can be done in a clinic, doctor’s office, or hospital. Turnaround time for results is usually very quick and in some cases, results can be reported within 15 minutes.
Sensitivity of this test in Nigeria is Currently: 30-40%

2. PCR test. PCR testing is considered the “gold standard” in SARS-CoV-2 detection. This test actually detects RNA (or genetic material) that is specific to the virus and can detect the virus within days of infection, even those who have no symptoms. The test can be done in a clinic, hospital, or even in your car. Turnaround time is longer, generally in the 1-2 day range but results can be in as little as 12 hours. When demand is high, results can take a week or longer.
The sensitivity of this test is 85%-99%

3. An antibody test, also known as a serology test, is a blood test that can detect if a person has antibodies to Covid-19, COVID-19 antibody tests can help identify people who may have been infected with the Covid-19 virus or have recovered from the COVID-19 infection
This test gives. The sensitivity of this test is between 35-45 % when used randomly and above 80% when properly.
