Headache is one of the commonest causes of visits to the GPs and Pharmacies. It could be due to a variety of reasons and is mostly benign hence resolves on its own however we should pay close attention if the headache persists and doesn’t respond to painkillers such as paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
\nThe commonest causes of headaches are.
\n1. Alcohol use
\n2. Changes in sleep patterns
\n3. Emotional Stress
\n4. Use of medications and stimulants
\n5. Eye, neck or back strain due to poor posture.
\n6. Noise
\n7. Light
\nThese tend to be benign and resolve on their own, all you need to do is to take painkillers.<\/p>\n
Headache with fever, chills and general body aches normally signifies an infection, you will need to rule out Malaria, Typhoid and other causes of infection in our environment.<\/p>\n
Persistent headache with or without dizziness in adults could also be a sign of cardiovascular disease, check your BP, cholesterol and blood sugar.<\/p>\n
If you are on antihypertensives\/ antidiabetics and get headaches\/to feel dizzy after taking your drugs, check your BP\/ Blood sugar to be sure that it’s not too low and discuss it with your doctor.<\/p>\n
If you have or witness someone with a sudden and severe headache, vomiting, drowsiness and restlessness, get that person to the nearest hospital.<\/p>\n
If you have or witness someone with sudden headache, weakness and loss of function on a part of the body get to the nearest hospital.<\/p>\n
While the majority of headaches are mostly self-limiting and do not need medical intervention, Headaches of more than 3 days should not be overlooked.
\nWe should also try as much as we can to understand the cause of our Headaches.
